Sonic the Hedgehog 3
“Gotta go fast!”
Shallow, speedy, and silly, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is more of the same from the series with lots of slogging exposition and fan service, but also some solid heart, occasional laughs and a very committed Jim Carrey, this time pulling double duty, to double the comedic effect, to deliver a solid time that should entertain fans of the hedgehog and his friends.
Discussion Points
I’m not the target demographic for these films, but I still find them entertaining. Big explosions, bright colours, goofy characters, overwhelming exposition, healthy fan service, solid heart - and the 3rd entry is neither better nor worse than what’s come before. It’ll entertain. It’ll distract. It’ll satisfy. I laughed a few times. I was engaged. I was thoroughly appreciative of the absolute malarkey that Jim Carrey was getting up to! I found Keanu Reeves to be a great shadow. Idris Elba and Ben Schwartz are still very well-cast and I’m so glad that Colleen O’Shaughnessy gets to continue playing Tails on the big screen. It definitely runs a little long, and it struggles to never feel predictable or rote, and it’s shackled by characters coated in plot armour, but it’s not trying to be a prestige film - it’s just aiming to be fun. And it achieved that.
