Nosferatu
“My dreams grow darker.”
Haunting, entrancing and disturbed, Nosferatu delivers a tragic tale of horror that is grotesque, grim, ghoulish and grandiose in this stunningly assembled visual nightmare that viscerally captures the vampiric classic in all its gothic glory with committed performances and phenomenal period detail that leave a long cast shadow on the mind.
Discussion Points:
Wow! I’m not a horror guy in the slightest but Robert Eggers films have always managed to intrigue me, engage me, and entrance me whilst unsettling me. His attention to period details and his rejection of cheap thrills to instead craft atmospheric dramas that are filled with increasing dread and horror has established him as a truly wonderful director of elevated horror. He’s most definitely the best suited to make an adaptation of the gothic classic vampiric tale in all its bloody, twisted, dark glory. The entire cast are sensational - with massive moments of intense physicality amidst quieter moments of despair. Lily Rose-Depp contorts her body in some insane ways. Bill Skarsgard is unrecognisable under some of the most impressive makeup work of the whole year! Nicholas Hoult, Willem Dafoe, Ralph Ineson, Simon McBurney, Emma Corrin and the ever dashing Aaron Taylor-Johnson are all absolutely fantastic - perfectly cast and excellent utilised. Additionally, as to be expected - the film looks STUNNING! Beautiful costumes, rich sets, and incredible cinematography. I’m glad the film isn’t just monochrome because it uses colour and shadow in such mesmerising ways. I was truly blown away by this and I’m ardently hoping it isn’t overlooked due to genre bias and garners awards acclaim because it is most definitely deserving.
