Paddington in Peru

“We’re going to Peru!”

Heartfelt, humorous and full of adventure, Paddington in Peru returns the beloved bear to the jungles of his childhood with the Brown family in tow, delivering continued giddy laughs, dry humour and genuine sincere emotion, in a threequel that doesn’t surpass its predecessors but still sits comfortably alongside them as a fun-filled expedition for the whole family!

Discussion Points:

Expectations were very high for this one! Paul King’s wonderful whimsy that emanates from the first two films is so warm and refreshing. And whilst director Dougal Wilson is no King, he still does well to capture the heart of the beloved bear. Paddington in Peru still retains everything that families have come to love about the series - sincere heart, dry British humour, fish-out-of-water antics and its charming cabal of characters and theatrical villains. Olivia Colman and Antonio Banderas are having an absolute blast and bring some of the biggest laughs in the film. Ben Whishaw’s soothing compassionate tone continues to endear Paddington to all he meets and he continues to be the heart of the film as he explores his heritage and comes to terms with his cross-cultural identity. Emily Mortimer does well to stand in the place of Sally Hawkins who was unable to return as Mrs Brown for this entry and the rest of the Brown family continue to provide plenty of heart and humour. Whilst the film suffers with some inconsistent pacing, and some inconsistent VFX in the jungle compared to the more tactile London, it’s still an engaging and entertaining adventure. Filled with lots of laughs, and heaps of charming sincerity, Paddington in Peru is another absolute winner! And it made me want a marmalade sandwich immensely!
