Venom: The Last Dance
“We are Venom.”
Dumb, stupid but fun, Venom: The Last Dance is a buddy comedy blast of a road trip romp that delivers brainless entertainment with mind numbing exposition and goo-filled action that serves as a fitting finale to the Lethal Protectors trilogy.
Discussion Points:
None of the Venom films are very good… but they can occasionally have some slightly good fleeting moments. Venom: The Last Dance has enough of those fleeting good moments to make it more enjoyable than arduous, but it’s still got plenty of exhausting exposition to wade through before you get to the fun parts. Tom Hardy fully commits to Eddie Brock. It shouldn’t work. But after 3 films. It does. This film understands its goofy ridiculousness and leans into it. And I’ll give it credit for that. The bromance between Eddie and the symbiote continues to be the most entertaining parts of this series. And it surprisingly leads to some really heartfelt moments as well. New additions to the cast are serviceable, except for Rhys Ifans who is an absolute scene stealer - and his hippie van rendition of Space Oddity will go down in my books as one of the great film covers. The action is solid - and aided by the films willingness early to show Venom in daytime settings rather than obscuring him in dark night until the final battle which end up being an overcast, smokey sludge fest. The effects are fairly solid, and the venomised horse and other animals look great - it’s obvious thought went into their designs. Ultimately, Venom: The Last Dance is another Venom film - if you liked the buddy dynamic of the first two or enjoy seeing symbiote goo go to town then this will be for you - or if you just enjoy turning your brain off and watching something that’s dumb but fun.
