Unstoppable
“The way he wrestles…he’s like a boa constrictor on that mat.”
Inspiring, uplifting and triumphant, Unstoppable is a sturdy sports underdog drama buoyed by a determined and driven Jharrel Jerome as the truly remarkable Anthony Robles, whose one-legged college wrestling career perfectly suits this classic feel-good approach that hits every expected beat, including some hefty emotional ones aided by a tender Jennifer Lopez.
Discussion Points:
Having served as the editor for all 4 of Ben Affleck’s feature films, in his directorial debut William Goldenberg now produced by Affleck and pal Damon, has delivered a sturdy sports biopic that never surprises or subverts the formula, but faithfully executes it to inspiring and uplifting results. Anthony Robles true triumphant story of overcoming his disability to conquer his opponents on the mat and be crowned the national college wrestling champion was always going to be a tear jerking, uplifting, crowd pleasing, heartwarming affair fit for the silver screen. But for as tempted as the film may be to get too cheesy, schmaltzy and celebratory, it remains grounded in the real life efforts and stakes of Robles hard earned accolades. His grit, determination and drive are a testament to his character, and Jharrel Jerome captures that with impeccable empathy. Robles received nothing on a silver platter, he had to fight uphill. His loving, supporting and long-suffering mother Judy is an inspiration in herself, and Jennifer Lopez continues to prove any doubters wrong about her acting abilities. Add not one, but two, empowering coaches played by Michael Peña and Don Cheadle, and a sorry excuse for a father figure in Bobby Cannavale - and the ensemble really elevate the material by keeping the focus on Robles self-made triumphs. It hits every note you’d expect, and the tune is very familiar, but it doesn’t miss any, and so it’s an rousing tune to hear that will likely leave many heart warmed and teary eyed.
