Hit Man
“By the way, my name is Gary Johnson. And I’m a fake hitman.”
Sexy, charismatic and comedic, Hit Man is a suave romantic comedy that keeps the audience guessing with a fantastic Glen Powell at the helm, delivering a performance that oscillates between so many masks, and that oozes charm, especially when paired with the beautiful Adria Arjona, in a plot that simultaneously examines its lead’s id, ego and superego amidst some deliciously dark humour to pull it all together.
Discussion Points:
Hit man? Hot man? Wing man? Hang man? Hot damn! What a sizzling, sexy, fun, brilliant, enigmatic, charismatic, psycho-analytical, darkly comedic good time! Richard Linklater and Glen Powell have delivered a uniquely original romantic comedy, that feels familiar yet wholly fresh. Powell and Arjona have a wonderful chemistry that propels the film from good to great, and Powell turns in a perfectly calibrated performance as he rotates through multiple different characters. The rest of the supporting cast also get some great comedic moments to shine, but this film really belongs to its leads. And not only is it a super entertaining romantic comedy, but it’s also a deeply fascinating deconstruction of the hitman mythos and of our own abilities to transform or perform our personalities. As a big fan of Linklater, this was immensely enjoyable and a film I can definitely see myself rewatching and recommending constantly to others! Shame Netflix have just dumped it on streaming where it risks getting buried because I can only imagine how great this would be to see in a packed theatre full of laughs and gasps. Great film!
