Discussion Points:
The Despicable Me franchise has become a cultural staple but the latest fourth entry comes a surprising 6 years after DM3. We’ve had Minion spin-offs since then, but it’s nice to be back with Gru and his family in a fairly light, breezy, and inoffensive offering. Nice to have a villain that really has a personal connection to Gru, but also if this film wasn’t animated - it would be super dark! He wants to kidnap a baby and turn them into a cockroach - that’s messed up aha. Will Ferrell voices the villain Maxime Le Mal super engagingly and the rest of the voice cast is great. Also this may be Illumination’s most impressively animated movie with incredible texture and detailed dynamically fluid motion. The Mega Minions superpowers are a fun side quest because story wise it’s not revolutionary, but it’s always entertaining, action-packed, I laughed frequently throughout. It’s a good time. Not a great film, but a good time.
