Anaconda
“Let’s do it. Let’s reboot Anaconda.”
Irreverent, self-aware and very silly (complimentary), Anaconda revels in its cheesy, meta approach to the franchise reboot, serving as both a spiritual successor, attempted remake, and slapstick spoof homage that’s full of very funny, stupid, scaly surprises sure to entertain a wide crowd.
Discussion Points:
Anaconda is both reverential and irreverent. It both deeply loves the original cult classic, and revers the filmmaking process, particularly the independent productions full of grit, heart and determination. It also is so stupid and silly and funny and dumb - all complimentary! Anaconda knows it’s cheesy. It’s very self-aware. Director Tom Gormican is no stranger to meta meme moviemaking after his delightfully dumb The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent. He has a great ability to tell stories about stories, and shatter the fourth wall with cameos and references. His comedic sensibilities are a perfect match for Paul Rudd and Jack Black and their charismatic, quippy, chaotic chemistry. They bring great energy to some lifelong friends trying to remake one of their favourite movies on a shoestring budget in the Amazon with a real snake on the loose! Other highlights include Steve Zahn (always the best part of any movie) and Selton Mello as their truly unhinged snake wrangler. It’s frequently funny, but also has some solid jump scares - and the massive titular titan is truly terrifying! This was a super pleasant surprise to round out 2025 with - a genuinely enjoyable, irreverent and entertaining Amazon adventure.
