Predator: Badlands
“You’re hunting something that can’t be killed.”
Thrilling, immersive and expansive, Predator: Badlands is a fresh new entry in the franchise, that takes its unique Predator as protagonist premise and delivers a grounded and compelling alien adventure that’s full of rageful action, impressive effects and comedic brevity in one of the most pleasantly surprising blockbusters of 2025.
Discussion Points:
Dan Trachtenberg being given the keys to the Predator universe continues to bear great results! His third Predator film is his best, in a wholly different way from previous. For the first time, the Predator is the protagonist, and teamed up with an android in a film with no humans but plenty of galactic animals. Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi brings incredible physicality to Dek, a young Yautja runt outcast from his clan and seeking honour in the hunt. His journey brings him to the planet Genna, where he crosses path with the legless android Thia, played by Elle Fanning. This odd couple pairing then embarks on a treacherous adventure through alien terrain to achieve their goals. The result is a unique road trip Predator film that’s full of creative action, broader world building and a surprising amount of heart and humour. Some may bemoan the lighter aspects, but I was really won over by the playful yet powerful tone the film balances between its more comedic moments and darker elements. And it definitely has some harsh brutality throughout. Visually, it’s also impressive, with seamless practical and computer generated effects, and great prosthetic makeup work. Ultimately, Predator: Badlands is a fantastic and fresh new entry in the franchise, able to appeal to newcomers and long-term fans alike. Come for the kills and thrills, stay for the heart and heroes.
