Eternity
"I have shocking news. You're dead."
Thoughtful, fantastical and playful, Eternity creatively explores an afterlife love triangle to both humorous and heartfelt results with a wonderful trio of Elizabeth Olsen, Callum Turner and Miles Teller in a heavenly hilarious but deeply poignant exploration of love, longing, loss and the little things that matter the most.
Discussion Points:
Sitting firmly alongside Palm Springs as one of the best high-concept rom coms ever, and just best rom coms in recent years, Eternity absolutely gets the utmost out of its creative eschatological conundrum. Elizabeth Olsen’s Joan finds herself stuck between the effortlessly “perfect” Luke (Callum Turner) and the loveable everyman Larry (Miles Teller). All three are full of emotion and energy, bringing love and life and laughter to what could be an overwrought, morbid or saccharine endeavour. Love is messy but thankfully Eternity is not. It’s carefully constructed as it explores the complexities of love, life, longing and loss. The people we love change over time. The love we have for people changes over time. And eternity is a long time to spend with the one or ones you love. The creativity extends beyond the screenplay into a wonderfully realised fantasy world of different eternities all connected to the bustling afterlife interchange staffed by afterlife coordinators like Anna (Da’Vine Joy Randolph) and Ryan (John Early) who frequently steal the show. I laughed, I cried, and I fell in love with these characters as they explored their love for each other. I may not agree with its take on eternity, but I still thoroughly enjoyed this romantic comedy that’s as heartfelt as it is humorous.
