One of Them Days
“You paid the rent right?”
Riotous, fresh and wildly fun, One of Them Days is a hip-hop hood comedy that’s fierce and rowdy with great performances, confident direction and a strong story about sisterhood and community in a vibrant debut for many involved.
Discussion Points:
It’s so refreshing to have a studio comedy in theatres and not dumped on streaming. Because this was great in a packed audience, laughing and enjoying the hijinks of two down-on-their-luck housemates who are just having one of those days where nothing goes their way. Keke Palmer and SZA are a fantastic pairing and I would happily watch plenty more buddy comedies featuring the two of them. Their charisma is off the charts and helps endear their goofy selves to the audience. A series of bad decisions and stupid mistakes leads to a great hood comedy complete with car chases, gangster bosses, and a high-end art show! I was consistently entertained and found the film to never lose momentum, despite some quieter character moments amidst the loud comedic chaos and surprising amount of stunt work. A crackling directorial debut for Lawrence Lamont, and a strong acting debut for SZA - I hope this leads to plenty more work from both of them!
