Twisters

“If you feel it, chase it.”

Thrilling, exciting and tornado-tastic, Twisters is far from a cinematic disaster, instead delivering a tense and terrific action blockbuster that updates the visual effects and scientific technology of the first, with a new group of engaging leads and a fast paced story that’s filled with heart stopping action and emotion.

Discussion Points:

Destined to go down as one of the best legacy sequels and just sequels of all time. A better film in every way than the original; which is still a solid film. Better effects, an equally compelling rag-tag bunch of storm chasers, a stacked cast, some even more silly science nonsense, and some really effective twister action scenes that evoke fear and awe. In the same way that films like Nope or Jurassic Park occasionally feel like horror films, Twisters has some pretty intense moments that feel scary. The tornadoes are these unstoppable and irrepressible forces that bring destruction and carnage. Seeing people getting sucked into them is truly terrifying. And the incredible effects work makes it all that much more visceral and exciting. A fantastic action blockbuster with plenty of tension and thrill, it’s crazy to think this came from the same director as the subtle and sunny Minari. But Lee Isaac Chung shows he can create a big blockbuster that still has heart, aided by Joseph Kosinski’s compelling story. Add a fantastic score from Benjamin Wallfisch, and great performances from Daisy Edgar-Jones, Glen Powell, Anthony Ramos and co. and it all combines into a hugely entertaining, engaging and exciting piece of action disaster blockbuster cinema.
