The Rip
“There’s $1.4 million in this bucket. I eyeball 14 more of these things. That’s a $20 million rip.”
Tense, taught and targeted, The Rip is a stylish cop crime thriller elevated by the ever-reliable pairing of Matt Damon and Ben Affleck in an edge of your seat shootout filled spectacle that keeps you guessing til the end.
Discussion Points:
After being fairy disappointed by Damon’s last crime flick costarring an Affleck The Instigators, I went into this January released Netflix streamer with low expectations but was absolutely blown away by this tense, gripping, well-shot, strongly acted crime thriller that keeps you guessing throughout. The pairing of Matt Damon and Ben Affleck and the use of their chemistry and shared history is leveraged perfectly to subvert expectations. The rest of the cast are stellar, but my favourite part may be the cinematography. This film looks incredible with some incredibly cool use of shadows as a visual motif to communicate the morally dubious situation that’s playing out. It may not have much to say about the wider themes of corruption and its causes, and it does get a little overblown by the end - but the performances, and production value really anchor this as a solid cop drama that I’d happily rewatch and recommend all year long.
