The Monkey

“The monkey that likes killing our family, it's back. It must be vanquished.”

Unhinged, morbid and gruesome, The Monkey is an ape-solutely bonkers bloody dark horror comedy that’s delirious and dryly deranged in it’s adaptation of the Stephen King short story that’s filled with dumb fun, self-aware stupidity and a double dose of dorky Theo James that all combines for a grizzly good time.

Discussion Points:

Osgood Perkins makes movies that absolutely commit to their tone. Last year’s Longlegs was a deeply disturbing serial killer thriller. The Monkey is completely different. A darkly twisted comedic Stephen King adaptation about a drumming monkey that summons death in the most freak accidents imaginable. What follows is very funny, very dumb and very gruesome. People set on fire, impaled and exploded in all manner of chaotic frenzy. And at its core, a very committed Theo James in a dual role as two twins haunted by the penal primate. He’s very silly as either a deranged twin determined to destroy or as an anxious twin desperate to avoid all risk. The dry dialogue is frequently riotous. The ominous haunting eyes of the mental monkey are enough to send a shiver down your spine. And again - the kills are brutal. It’s madness. It’s chaos. It’s a good gruesome gory time for people who enjoy bloody dark horror comedies and monkeying around.
